What is an Athletic Mouthguard?
An athletic mouthguard is “a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips, and gums.”
Why are Athletic Mouthguards needed?
Customized sports mouth guards for athletes are the best protection available to reduce the severity of sports related dental injuries. Collisions happen on the playing field, falls happen on the court, hits happen in the rink. Whether you or your child plays a contact sport, a mouth protector is an essential piece of equipment, just like a helmet, uniform, cleats, knee pads, or skates.
Direct impact to the mouth can cause serious dental damage, including:
- Broken teeth.
- Chipped teeth.
- Knocked-out teeth.
- Dislodged teeth.
- Displaced teeth.
- Damaged cosmetic dentistry.
- Compromised orthodontia.
- Damaged bite alignment.
- Cut lips.
- Damaged soft tissue.
- Injured tongue or cheeks.
- Jaw damage.
- Nerve damage.
I highly recommend family dental in Biddeford, me. I’ve always been very nervous about going to get dental work done. Here it’s been a pleasant and pain free experience.

What Makes You A Good Candidate for Athletic Mouth Guards?
High-contact sports can lead to oral trauma and damaged teeth. Athletes who play football, hockey, and other contact sports should always wear a mouth guard. Sometimes referred to as a sports guard, these oral appliances are specially designed to help absorb the shock and impact that the teeth can suffer from. This protects the teeth from cracking or breaking.
Professionally crafted mouth guards are also thicker, increasing their effectiveness.
Mouth guards are an essential part of player safety. Protecting yourself or your child is worth the money to invest in a customized mouth guard.
What to Expect With Mouth Guards
To create your mouth guard, we will take a series of digital or physical impressions of your mouth. Your impressions will be sent off to a dental laboratory where your mouth guard will be carefully crafted from durable, high-quality materials. Once your mouth guard is made and sent back to our office, you will come back to our office for a fitting. We will make sure that your guard fits properly and feels comfortable.
Visit our office to be fitted for a protective mouth guard that is highly effective in protecting your teeth, gums, and mouth from sports-related injuries.
